How Great is Our God
Today’s sermon is, How Great is Our God. The sermon will be given, not by me, but by Louie Giglio. Louie Giglio (born 1958) is a Christian pastor/evangelist and founder of Choice Ministries and Passion Conferences. He has made a series of Christian DVDs not unlike the one you will see shortly. Actually, you can thank our own Rich Foreman for the sermon. It was Rich that gave this DVD to me as well as another DVD by Louie Giglio called, Indescribable. I give my sincere, heartfelt thanks to Rich.
But wait! There’s more. I have five slides that I hope will make you think. And perhaps, they can help you get just a glimpse into God, eternity, and infinity. They give me a feeling akin to what I feel on a warm summer night when I lie on the grass and contemplate the heavens above me. Here we go.
(Eccl 3:11 RSV) He has made everything beautiful in its time; also he has put eternity into man's mind, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
(Isa 57:15 RSV) For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
That beautiful Christian song, Amazing Grace, has these words for one verse…
When we've been there ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we first begun.
John Newton got it exactly right. No matter how much time you spend in eternity there is still an eternity ahead of you!
Not only is God infinitely large but he is also infinitely small. That simply means there is no place you can go where God isn’t already there.
You all know that there is an infinite number of numbers. No matter how big your number is I can always add one more to it. But here is something maybe you didn’t know, there are just as many numbers between any two different numbers as there are between 0 and the largest number you can name! Let’s check it out.
Let’s start with 1 and approach 0 by dividing by 1000.
You can see there is absolutely no end to how many times we can do this and yet never reach 0! We would forever be approaching 0 but we would never arrive!
What we just saw is true for any two different numbers. We can get perhaps a fleeting glimpse of God in this exercise. If I gave you all the numbers above 1 and below 0 then I would still have an infinite number of numbers. God is something like that; in as much as no matter what God does He is not diminished. After creating the heavens and the earth he was not in the least tired or diminished. God is eternal and infinite.
Now, on with the show, How Great is Our God!
