Counting The Cost
Vs 26 - If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
††††††††††† Jesus was not an advocater of hatred for anyone, not even our enemies.
††††††††††† Strongs Concordance Ė ďTo love lessĒ
††††††††††† Following Jesus must be our highest love, our first priority.†† All other ties, obligatiions and interests must take a lesser place in our heart and life than our love for Jesus.
Vs 27 - And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my † disciple.
††††††††††† Bearing the cross speaks of sacrifice, hardship and persecution††††††††
John 15:20 †Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
2 Timothy 3:12 †Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
Luke 9:24-27 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.† 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?† 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
††††††††††† Coming after Jesus speaks of submission, commitment and obedience to His will.†
Remembering that He went through everything that He asks of us Himself.
John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments
Vs 28-30 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?† 29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it,† all that behold it begin to mock him, 30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
††††††††††† Now Jesus is speaking to those people who want to become His disciples.†††††††††††
††††††††††† Is Jesus saying that before we become His disciple, we should decide if we are truly willing and able to pay the cost of discipleship?
††††††††††† Does Jesus want us to give up before we start if we donít think we can do it?
††††††††††† I think about Moses
††††††††††† Is that how you came to Christ? Thatís not how I came.
††††††††††† Is Jesus really saying donít start something you canít finish?
††††††††††† I believe He is, but how does He want us to understand it?
††††††††††† Jesus could have told a different story about a man who had enough resources to build a tower, but Heís telling us about a man who doesnít have enough.
††††††††††† Could Jesus be saying† ďyou are like this man; you donít have what it takes to build what you are trying to build.
You are trying to build a good and successful life with your worldly resources.† But soon they will be gone.†
The only way to succeed is to come to me with all your heart, soul and life surrendered to God.
God alone has the resources to build an eternal and successful life.
Vs 31-32 Ė 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?†
Vs 32 -† Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth†††† conditions of peace.
Jesus is telling us about a king who doesnít have the resources to keep his kingdom in tact.
††††††††††† But the king has wisdom.
††††††††††† He seeks a peaceful settlement before the other king comes against him and takes his life and his kingdom away.
Is Jesus saying that we are like that first king who doesnít have the† resources to win?
Is Jesus saying if you donít have what it takes surrender?
††††††††††† Jesus knows that we donít have what it will take unless we get it from Him.
Is He asking us to consider now, in this life, whether our worldly resources are enough to build our own kingdom without God?
Is He saying that we should make peace with the Divine King on His terms before it is too late?
And who is the ambassator that makes peace between man and a holy God?
††††††††††† †The answer is obvious.† Without pleasing God and living our life His way, we have no hope of having anything that lasts.
††††††††††† We cannot succeed.
Since we donít have what it takes to make our life truly good and successful, let us turn in trust to the One who loves us and wants to make us successful in His Kingdom.
Vs 33 -† So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
††††††††††† What is the cost of being Jesusí disciple?
††††††††††† Everything; everthing in your life in complete submission and obedience to your Savior.
††††††††††† I ask you today are you willing to pay the cost?
††††††††††† Will you be the disciple today that Jesus wants you to be?
††††††††††† Are there any comments on Vs 33?
In the Grants Pass church we end our worship service with a blessing.† I would like to share that blessing with you today.
God told Moses to have Aaron bless His people with these words.
In the 6th chapter of Numbers starting with vs 24.
24 The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:
25 The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
26 The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
27 And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.
